Updated 5:40 p.m. A tractor-trailer caught fire and shut down Interstate 5 in the Ashland area for about 40 minutes this afternoon, the Oregon Department of Transportation reports.
The burning truck was reported just before 4:50 p.m. near milepost 17 in the northbound lanes. The freeway was temporarily closed at exits 14 and 19 to divert traffic around the fire, which was near the Port of Entry, ODOT reported.
The fast lane reopened at about 5:30 p.m., although the slow lane was still closed while crews cleaned up after the fire .Initial reports say the fire may have started with overheated brakes, ODOT officials said.
The ODOT site www.tripcheck.com reported that drivers should seek an alternate route and expect delays.
We will have more details as they become available.
