  • The school year is coming to a close but remembrances of good times still linger. For many, those memories last decades. But then, after all, who can forget an Ashland High School prom?
Dale A. Monroe (Class of 1960) attended the 1959 prom with Linda Rae Barker (Class of 1961), whom he had been dating for a year. They became a couple when Dale asked Linda to dance at a Methodist youth fellowship party in 1958. She was 15 and he was a 16-year-old driving a 1957 Chevy. And they have been together ever since.
Linda remembers Dale's everyday fashion sense was casual — white T-shirts and denim jeans in which he advised friends "to tuck the pant legs under and never let your mom wash them." But on prom night, he was swank in a dark suit and boutineer. Linda, who has dresses made for her, some by her mother, wore a glamorous sleeveless gown and a giant corsage.
"We attended our 50th high school reunions and reconnected with several of our classmates, which was great," says Linda.
Carol Axson Rhinehart (Class of 1964) and Chuck Calhoun (Class of 1963) posed for a photo at his parents' house before going to the 1963 Ashland High School prom at Southern Oregon College's Student Union Building. "We all had fairly early curfews so we were probably home by midnight and then we were up early the next morning to drive to Brookings where we spent the day at the beach," says Rhinehart, who also remembers paying $30 for her tailored green dress. Chuck wore a white coat and black bow tie. The couple also attended the prom in 1962. He in a black suit, she in a chiffon lilac number.
In 1979, Kevin M. Spencer (AHS Class of 1979) sported a power-blue tux with matching bow tie and cummerbund and went to the Eagle Point prom with Jackie Jacoby (now Jacki Majia) (Eagle Point Class of 1980). He remembers this prom was just before his Ashland High prom. "I had bought us both tickets to each," he recalls. "We broke up in between proms so I had to find a date to use my other prom ticket, so I asked Portland Bardot who was as I remember a sophomore."
Back then, he wore Angel Flight jackets, blue jeans and tennis shoes to school. "Disco dancing was dying," he says, "but there was still a lot of Bee Gees, Foreigner, Donna Summers, Boston, Chicago, Abba and Barry Manilow."
Spencer and his wife, Debra, live in Petersburg, Ind., and Majia and her husband, Art, live in Sutherlin, Ore. Both Spencer and Majia are nurses, and, Spencer adds, "We are still extremely close friends." He hopes to be at the 2014 reunion, 35 years after his graduation.
