SOU athlete arrested for indecent exposure

A 19-year-old Southern Oregon University student was arrested Tuesday on a charge of indecent exposure after he allegedly confronted two shoppers while naked and masturbating in the Rogue Valley Mall parking lot Monday.

Medford police said they found Lance Alan Tausaga, of Ashland, while he was working out at the university's gym about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and took him into custody on one charge of indecent exposure.

He was lodged at the Jackson County Jail in Medford, then released Tuesday night after posting bail, jail officials said.

Tausaga was a member of the SOU Raiders' football team in the fall. The team roster listed Tausaga as a 5-foot-11, 210-pound sophomore linebacker from Cave Junction.

Police said a naked man jumped out of a parked orange Chevrolet Aveo at 10:48 a.m. Monday and verbally confronted the two victims while openly masturbating.

The women, one age 40 and the other described as a senior citizen, fled to the mall and telephoned police, Lt. Bob Hansen said.

The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, but one of the women was able to describe the compact car to officers as well as provide its license plate, Hansen said.

Officers then traced the vehicle to Tausaga, its owner, Hansen said.

A search of court records revealed no criminal history for Tausaga in Oregon.

Investigators believe Tausaga may have been involved in a similar, yet unreported incident at the Bear Creek Shopping Center in Medford within the past few months, Hansen said.

Anyone with information about that incident was urged to telephone Medford police at 541-774-2230.
