Brammo partners with Jackie Chan

Ashland company will begin selling its electric motorcycles in Hong Kong, Singapore, Beijing

Brammo Inc. is taking its electric motorcycles from Ashland to Asia with the help of actor Jackie Chan.

The Ashland company will begin selling its Enertia motorcycle in Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing later this year, Brammo announced Monday.

Brammo has partnered with JCAM Advanced Mobility Company Ltd., a Hong Kong-based electric vehicle distribution company that Chan co-founded in 2005.

Chan, a martial arts expert known for performing his own stunts in movies such as "Rush Hour," will help market the bikes, Brammo said.

"When I first saw early pictures of the Enertia I really liked it," Chan said in a release. "Now that it is here, I love it!"

Adrian Stewart, Brammo director of sales and marketing, said he couldn't comment on rumors that the Enertia will appear in Chan's next movie, "Chinese Zodiac," which is in the pre-production stage.

"However, it will be Jackie's 100th movie, so it's going to be a very significant movie for him," Stewart said.

The Enertia has been for sale at some Best Buy stores since August 2009. The bike, which costs $7,995, has a top speed of more than 60 mph, a range of 42 miles and a charging time of about four hours.

Sales in the U.S. are starting to pick up as the weather gets warmer, Stewart said. In the coming months, the bike will be for sale in 50 more Best Buy stores, including the new store planned for Medford, he said.

The bike already has appeared at motorcycle shows in Asia. The Enertia also will be sold in Europe in the coming months, Stewart said.

Brammo opted to partner with Chan because his company, which is also the Asian distributor for Segway, understands the market and has a proven track record, the company said.

"Partnering with a global film and business icon like Jackie Chan further validates the Brammo brand — much like our U.S. partnership with retailer Best Buy — as being an innovator in both product development and retail distribution," said Craig Bramscher, Brammo founder and chief executive officer.

Brammo and JCAM have been talking about partnering for the past two years, said Matt McGuire, JCAM managing director.

"This is the beginning of something new for JCAM and we are very excited," he said.
