Concert to benefit restoration of historic pipe organ

The Graves family will sing together

An evening of music at the First United Methodist Church will raise money to help fund the recent restoration of the church's 80-year-old pipe organ.

The Graves family — Joelle, Roger and Colleen Graves — with Jennifer Schloming present "Family of Song," on Sunday.

The performance includes Mozart's C minor Mass; trios from Offenbach's "Tales of Hoffman," Gershwin's "Summertime" and "I Fly Free," all arranged by Brian Kerns. Special selections include Joelle singing the Mozart "Alleluia," Colleen featured on Bernstein's "Simple Song" and Roger singing "You Lift Me up." Colleen sings "One Last Kiss" from Sondheim's "Follies" with her mom and "The Prayer" with her dad. The evening will include stories scattered throughout about the family's love of music and Colleen's emergence into the world of music with her parents.

The concert is one of a series sponsored by First United Methodist Church of Ashland to benefit restoration of the historic 1929 Reuter Pipe Organ.

Colleen Graves been performing since the age of 8. Beginning with piano and violin, she made her way to the saxophone and ultimately decided to sing while attending Southern Oregon University for her bachelor's in music. She studied voice with her mother Joelle under Fredna Grimland, and was coached by Laurie Anne Hunter. As a soprano she has performed with Rogue Opera in Gilbert and Sullivan's "Pirates of Penzance," Mozart's "The Magic Flute," with Southern Oregon Repertory Singers as a featured soloist or choir member, and multiple professional master classes. She serves as soprano section leader for Trinity Episcopal Church in Ashland with musical director Paul French in addition to her third year as music office and recital hall manager for the Performing Arts Department at SOU.

Colleen's mother Joelle is a soprano who performs in musical theater and has an extensive classical repertoire. She has performed for Rogue Music theatre, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He experience also includes Rogue Opera, Rim Rock Opera, Rogue Valley Symphony, Southern Oregon Repertory Singers and many others. Prior to moving to the Rogue Valley 21 years ago, Joelle and Rogere were company members of the Los Altos Conservatory Theater. Joelle studied voice at College of Notre Dame and currently coaches with Fredna Grimland.

Roger Graves is a tenor who has sung or acted with many performing arts groups in the valley. He has sung leading roles with Rogue Music Theatre, guest soloist with Rogue Valley Symphony, Rogue Valley Chorale, Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, Rogue Opera and others.

The program begins at 3 p.m. in the Historic Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Ashland, 175 N. Main St., on the corner of North Main and Laurel streets. A reception follows the concert. Tickets are available at Paddington Station, 125 E. Main St., and at the door. The cost is $15 for adults, $10 for students.
