Oregon State Poetry Association sponsors 2010 poetry contest for all students in Oregon schools

 Posted: 9:55 AM November 13, 2009

The Oregon State Poetry Association has opened submissions to its annual poetry contest for Oregon students in grades kindergarten through 12. All Oregon students enrolled in public, private, parochial, alternative and home schools are invited to participate. There is no entry fee.

Contest entries will be judged in four separate divisions: Division I for students in kindergarten and first and second grades; Division II for third, fourth, and fifth-graders; Division II for students in grades six, seven, and eight; and Division IV for high-school students — grades nine, 10, 11 and 12. The judges will include English teachers and established Oregon poets.

Cash prizes will be given for the winning poems and they will be published in Cascadia. The winning poems in Divisions II and IV will also be submitted to a national contest, the Manningham Trust Student Awards, sponsored by the National Federation of State Poetry Societies.

Poems submitted to the 2010 OSPA Student Contest must be postmarked by Feb. 1. For complete rules and guidelines and for more information about OSPA, go to the OSPA Web site, oregonpoets.org, or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to P.O. Box 744, Medford, OR 97501.

OSPA's mission is to bring together the widest possible community of Oregon poets; to help Oregon poets, young and old, develop their talents and skills; to stimulate a statewide appreciation of poetry; and to raise public awareness of Oregon poets.
