A third Josephine County resident who tested positive for the H1N1 virus has died.
A spokesman for Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass confirmed that a woman in her late 30s died within the past few days. The hospital declined to provide additional information, citing patient privacy laws.
Many people who test positive for the virus died of other causes such as pneumonia or bacterial infection.
Josephine County Public Health Director Belle Shepherd said the county has had 75 confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus, and 45 cases have required hospitalization.
State data has recorded 74 confirmed H1N1 hospitalizations in Jackson County, but county public health officials said the state data posting lags behind local reports, and there have been many more people hospitalized with H1N1. There has been one confirmed H1N1 flu death in Jackson County since Sept. 1, and one earlier in the summer.
