SOU's Schneider Museum of Art to host concert with area performers

Schuman and friends playing at the opening reception.

Southern Oregon University's Schneider Museum of Art will host a concert on Thursday at 7 p.m. in support of the exhibition "Harmonie Universelle: Four Continents of Musical Instruments from SOU's Schuman Collection." The concert is free with museum admission ($5 suggested donation) and is free to museum members, plus any and all students, faculty or staff of SOU or of any other Oregon school (must show ID).

The concert will feature area musicians Nils Olof Soderback, Kevin Carr and Mark Nelson as well as local groups Feira Charanga (Galician folk music), Nastrave! (Balkans) and Sandya (Nothern India raga).

This mix of world music underscores the breadth and cultural reach of the Schuman Collection, which includes string, wind and percussion instruments dating from the 16th through 20th centuries and from all the continents except Antarctica.

"Harmonie Universelle" is accompanied by a show of recent works of visual art that have been added to the permanent collection of the Schneider Museum. Included are pieces by Andy Warhol, Kathe Kollwitz, Marcel Janco, Maurice Vlaminck, Roberto Matta, Victor Vasarely, Lynn Chadwick, Robert Cumming and Lita Albuquerque.

The shows will run through Dec. 12. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The museum is located in the Center for the Visual Arts, on the SOU campus, at the intersection of Indiana Street and Siskiyou Boulevard. Parking is available in the lots behind and near the museum, as well as in the pay lot off Indiana Street (follow signs). For more information, call 552-6245.
