Talent's largest park will receive $342,000 to pave its gravel parking lot and to upgrade facilities. But the work won't take place until 2012 or 2013, city officials say.
The 12-acre Chuck Roberts Park on Talent Avenue includes ball fields, tennis courts, a basketball court, playgrounds, picnic shelters and tables and other amenities.
"It's a heavily used park in Talent that could be helped out a lot with a nice parking lot," said Jeff Ballard, a city engineer. The ¾-acre lot will have 70 parking spaces.
Rogue Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization's policy committee last week selected the park to receive the funds because paving will reduce the amount of fine particulate sent into the air. The award will come from the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program. The Rogue Valley is designated as a maintenance area for particulate matter and carbon monoxide under the program.
About one-third of the lot will be covered with Grasspave, a plastic subsurface reinforcement structure for traffic areas that supports grass and prevents rutting and mud. Grasspave allows water to pass to the soil underneath. Vehicles will park on grass. The driveway and other parking spaces will be paved with porous pavements now available, Ballard said.
Upgrades to Talent Avenue that included sidewalks and bike lanes were completed this year on the east side of the park. The parking lot also will be landscaped.
