Geothermal gets $40M in stimulus funds

PORTLAND — Nearly $40 million in stimulus spending is scheduled for geothermal projects in southern Oregon.

Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley announced the Energy Department grants Thursday.

Nearly $30 million will go toward work near Newberry Crater south of Bend: $25 million on power-producing technology involving water injected into the earth and about $4.5 million on technology to locate geothermal reservoirs.

In Klamath Falls, $1 million is for Oregon Institute of Technology and $800,000 is for the city.

Other grants are near Glass Buttes east of Bend, $4.4 million to locate faults in geothermal reservoirs; Paisley, $2 million for power plant and aquaculture projects; and Adel, $1.8 million for testing drilling techniques.
