See Crater Lake for free this weekend

 Posted: 5:06 PM August 11, 2009

There will be no entrance fees for people visiting the Crater Lake National Park on Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend is one of three free-entry weekends the National Park Service plans this year as an incentive for everyone to take advantage of what the state's only national park has to offer.

The service wants to reinforce that our national parks are places for everyone to have fun, reconnect with nature, history and to help build a sense of ownership and stewardship toward our parks in these difficult economic times, explained park spokesman Michael Justin.

However, the free entry applies only to park entrance fees. The offer does not affect other fees for camping, rooms, food or merchandise.

Annual passes for the park are available at the entrance station for $20. The passes can also be used for the Lava Beds National Monument.

During the free entry weekend, the Steel Visitor Center in Munson Valley will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Park rangers, interpreters and Park National History Association staff will be on hand to answer questions.

For hours of concession facilities or lodging reservations, call 888-774-2728; for general concession information, call 541-594-2255.
