Ashland is the sort of community where you have the ultimate cheap date built right in with your artistic neighbors. The First Friday Art Walk is teeming with free samples of food and wine, free music and other performances and, of course, the art!

The event is put on by the Ashland Gallery Association with, get this, more than 30 galleries to wander through. The official event lasts from 5 to 8 p.m. once a month on the first Friday.

Just about any Ashlander who's participated or been out and about on a First Friday knows the good times generally don't stop with staring at a painting and discussing its meaning, implications or general appeal. The tunes continue well into the night.

Live music is abundant with many of Ashland's more musically inclined residents out performing their original tunes, sometimes on the streets and often in a gallery or eatery. Simply wander through downtown and the Railroad District, listen for a beat and you will have found what is bound to be a rather talented Ashlander showing their art.

Information about Ashland's First Friday Art Walk can be found at and at the Ashland Chamber of Commerce. Happy walking.
