An investigation is continuing into the cause of a crash between a logging truck and a passenger vehicle driven by a Roseburg woman with her 20-month-old child in the backseat.
Oregon State Police troopers are continuing the investigation into Tuesday morning's fatal traffic crash that resulted in the death of a Roseburg-area woman and minor injuries to her son on Highway 38 about eleven miles east of Reedsport. The victim's name is being released following completion of next of kin notification.
According to OSP, on August 4, 2009 at approximately 2 a.m. an unloaded log truck driven by Matthew Dale Fjeld, age 26, from Coquille, was eastbound on Highway 38 near milepost 11 when Fjeld saw what appeared to be westbound headlights from a passenger car coming in his direction. Fjeld steered to the right but was unable avoid a collision with the westbound vehicle in the eastbound lane.
The driver of the 2001 Ford Mustang identified as Sarina Noelle Chavarria, age 20, from Roseburg, was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and her car's airbag deployed. Her 20-month old son, Cyrus Stratton, seated in a child safety seat in the right rear passenger area received minor injuries.
Fjeld was not injured.
OSP troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP crash reconstructionist. At this time investigators do not know why the car crossed into the opposite lane of travel.
Douglas County Sheriff's Office, Scottsburg and Reedsport Fire Departments, and ODOT assisted at the scene. The highway was re-opened to one lane about 7:45 a.m.
