Since 1909, Bigham Farms has been growing fresh vegetables from the same land in Central Point.

Brandon Bigham, the fifth-generation of Bighams, is learning the ropes of operating a farm the same way previous generations of Bighams, did before: through hands-on experience. Brandon Bigham helps his father, Doug Bigham, operate the stand at the Tuesday Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market and he has his own garden on Bigham Farms.

"He's trying to beat me in corn," Doug Bigham said. The two Bighams are racing each other to see who will have a corn crop first.

Bigham Farms featured farm-fresh green beans at Tuesday's Growers Market, but more crops are coming soon. The farm is currently taking orders for cucumbers, which Doug Bigham said should be available until the frost. Savvy shoppers should also be on the lookout for the last of the farm's potato crop next week.

"Corn's coming in another week, then tomatoes, then melons," Doug Bigham said. "Most of our stuff is just now getting started."

Bigham Farms can be found every Tuesday at the market, where the family has been for the past 18 years.

The Rogue Valley Growers & Crafters Market is held on Tuesdays at the Ashland Armory, 1420 E. Main St., from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday market is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Lithia and First streets. For more information, call 261-5045.
