  • The Ashland Growers Markets attract enterprising vendors from all over Southern Oregon. For Quinn Barker of Ashland's Meadowlark Family Farms, the trip to the market is never long.
    Barker got his start in organic farming as an intern at Boone's Farms, another local farm that sells at the Growers Market. He took those lessons to heart, and for the past three years he has operated Meadowlark Family Farms with his wife, Melina. The Barkers lease the Ashland farmland from Melina's father and stepmother.
    "They're very understanding of the mess I create," Barker said.
    The farm sells a variety of vegetables, from locally grown green lettuce, beets and carrots to organic basil and garlic. Barker's specialty is his organic salad mix, which includes stertiums, an edible flower that adds a unique taste and texture.
    "A loyal group of customers really appreciate it," Barker said.
    Meadowlark Family Farms can be found at the Tuesday and Saturday Growers Market and can be reached by phone at 821-8082.
    The Growers Market is held on Tuesdays at the Ashland Armory, 1420 E. Main St., from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Saturday Market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at the corner of Lithia and First streets. For more information, call 261-5045.
