State parks offer free night of camping

 Posted: 10:03 AM June 10, 2009

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) is offering a free camping night as part of a special summertime promotion at 20 state parks across Oregon.

The department is introducing a coupon today (June 10) that entitles customers who rent campsites for two consecutive nights to another night's stay for free, Sunday through Thursday.

The coupons, which are good through Sept. 30, must be printed off the department's website, www.oregonstateparks.org.

The "buy two, get one free" offer is limited to one per customer per stay, and excludes yurts and cabins. The parks honoring the coupons rent sites exclusively on a first-come, first served basis.

OPRD chose the 20 parks to highlight state park campgrounds where reservations are not accepted. "We're hoping people will discover the special experiences they can have camping at places that may not be as well known as some of our reservation parks," said McCormick. "These parks are treasures, and we want to encourage everybody to discover them for themselves."

The parks offering a night of free camping include Collier Memorial State Park, home of a renowned outdoor logging museum 30 miles north of Klamath Falls, and Cape Blanco State Park, next to Oregon's oldest lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the state, nine miles north of Port Orford. Humbug Mountain State Park, six miles south of Port Orford, has the state's largest number of non-reservable campsites (94), and the distinction of being the first state park campground built on the Oregon coast.

The other parks are:

• Carl Washburne, 14 miles north of Florence, and Alfred A. Loeb, 10 miles northeast of Brookings, on the coast;

• Ainsworth, 18 miles east of Troutdale, and Viento, eight miles west of Hood River, in the Columbia River Gorge;

• Cascadia, 14 miles east of Sweet Home, and Fall Creek State Recreation Area's Cascara campground, 27 miles southeast of Eugene an Springfield, in the western foothills of the Cascades;

• Goose Lake, 14 miles south of Lakeview; Jackson Kimball, 10 miles southeast of Crater Lake National Park; and the Jasper Point campground in Prineville Reservoir State Park, 16 miles southeast of Prineville in central Oregon;

• Catherine Creek, eight miles southeast of Union; Clyde Holliday, six miles west of John Day; Hilgard Junction, eight miles west of La Grande; Lake Owyhee, 33 miles southwest of Nyssa; Minam, 15 miles northeast of Elgin; Red Bridge, 16 miles southwest of La Grande; Ukiah-Dale Forest, three miles southwest of Ukiah, and Unity Lake, 50 miles east of John Day, in eastern Oregon.

More information about these parks is available on individual park pages through www.oregonstateparks.org and by calling 1-800-551-6949.
