Casey Schein advances to Class 5A quarters

Ashland High junior Casey Schein defeated Meagan Resecker of South Albany 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the OSAA Class 5A girls state tennis tournament Thursday at the Portland Tennis Center.

Maggie Schein, an Ashland freshman, dropped her first-round singles match against Century's Katie Edwards, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while the Grizzlies doubles team of Christi Gay and Chloe Deckwar lost to Katie Patterson and Melany Boulton of Sherwood, 6-2, 6-3.

In the 5A boys tourney, Ashland singles players Nick Cross and Sean Cleveland both dropped their sub-round matches at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. Cross fell to Chris Meek of Lebanon, 6-2, 6-2, and Cleveland lost to Isaac Wilson of Wilsonville, 6-1, 6-4.

Casey Schein, the No. 2 seed, will play Charlotte Fisher of Crescent Valley in today's quarterfinals, with the winner of that match slated to face either No. 3-seeded Allison Bostrom of Crescent Valley or Allison Hamel of Bend in the semis later in the day.

Each of the top four seeds advanced to the quarterfinals.

Ashland's first-round losers still can pick up team points for the Grizzlies in the consolation bracket: Maggie Schein faces Alisha Hansen of Wilsonville in the quarterfinal round of the eight-player bracket, while Gay and Deckwar take on Allison Meyer and Emma Nathan of Cleveland.
