Raiders lose again, fall to 0-3

Staff and Wire reports

The Western Baptist College women's soccer team held off a strong Southern Oregon University second-half surge to post a 4-2 Cascade Conference victory at North Mountain Park tonight.

Sophomore Kathleen Studenny scored twice on indirect kicks within nine minutes in the opening half. Sophomore forward Haley Owens staked the Warriors (3-2 overall, 1-0 CC) to a 3-nil lead and accounted for the game-winning goal with a 10-yard breakaway early in the second period.

The Raiders (0-3, 0-1), who are off to the school's most sluggish start since 2001, received inside-the-box goals from senior midfielder Jeannelle Thompson (in the 53rd minute) and junior all-star forward Katie Emerson (in the 65th minute) to pull within 3-2.

Southern midfielder Julia Reed missed an open 20-yard look and a well-paced potential equalizer wide left in the 70th minute, and former South Medford High standout Lyndsey Hawk quelled the SOU charge with a 74th-minute winner on a close-range corner kick rebound.

"We played our best soccer of the season in the second half, but we're in the habit of falling behind by multiple goals before we start to play the way we should play," Raider coach Jose Chavez said. "Even still, we played hard and gave ourselves a chance in the second half, and I'm pleased with that effort."

SOU finished with a 20-17 edge in total shots, including Reed's game-high seven and five from Emerson, but WBC held an 11-9 advantage in shots on goal.

The Raiders seek to snap a four-game slide dating back to last season Sunday in a non-conference tilt at Dominican University in San Rafael, Calif., while the Warriors take league rival Oregon Tech Saturday in Klamath Falls.
